Hoodie Allen – Feel The Love

This song is dedicated to all the fans who have helped me feel the love since I’ve started making music. This is the least I can do to say thank you – Hoodie Allen

Thanks to the Hoodie Mob coming through with 13,000 likes on Hoodie’s facebook status last night, Allen decided to release a new song and lyric video for all of us. The song, titled Feel the Love samples from the song of the same name by Rudimental ft John Newman. I had been meaning to post that song for some time now, but tying it in with this new Hoodie release lets me give you both songs right now. Im not completly feeling Hoodie’s first verse, but after that it really picks up when he gets into his wordplay and his singing. Whenever anyone can drop a Based God reference, J-Wow shoutout and a line involving Prince Harry you got to take a listen. So check it out and also check out the original song and enjoy!

Lana Del Rey and A$AP Rocky – “National Anthem [Music Video]” & “Ridin”

New York natives, Lana Del Rey and A$AP Rocky, have caused quite a stir in the past couple of days. To start, the two recently released the music video for “National Anthem,” a video that grips at the national psyche with its reinterpretation of the often romanticized Kennedys and their ‘American Camelot.’ JFK is played by the nonchalant and ever composed A$AP Rocky,  who dons his usual snapback and array of jewelry; Lana plays Marilyn Monroe in the video’s beginning, before later assuming the part of Jackie Kennedy. The video is highly political and everyone seems to have their own take on it. Even A$AP seems to be unable to put the video into exact words:

“We did a video together … [it's] some swag sh–,” he said. “I play JFK, she plays Jackie O, you know, some cool, trippy sh–, some really 2015 sh–. People gonna get it in like three years, and that’s the whole purpose of it.” (A$AP Rocky, Source: MTV News)

To be fair, Lana was the originator of the idea behind the video and it is probably safe to say that only she and the director truly understand the emotional and intellectual significance of each scene. Oversimplified, the video is a dark, brooding love story that wrestles with the status quo. But if a picture is worth a thousand words, then this video is worth thousands more.

And in addition to “National Anthem” A$AP and Lana have also collaborated on “Ridin,” a feel-good summer cruising song produced by the Kickdrums. The song makes expert use of Lana’s sensual voice and old-time sound, both of which are perfect complements to the insouciant beat and A$AP’s flow.

From Across The Pond – Conor Maynard

Seeing as how I haven’t done a from across the pond post recently, I figured now was as a good a time as ever. So this is a post to introduce you to possibly the next big male star, Conor Maynard.

The Brighton based teen rose to fame through the magic of the internet, specifically through his various cover songs he posted on YouTube. He covered popular US R&B songs by the likes of Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Usher, Katy Perry and countless others, quickly racking up hundreds of thousands of views. This all culminated with a Skype call with Ne-Yo whose track Beautiful Monsters, had been covered by Conor and had rapidly reached 1 million views. If you realized that this sounds a bit similar to the way Justin Bieber got noticed, you’d be correct.

But here is where their journeys separate. Conor has yet to be “imported” to the US Airwaves, and it will be interesting to see the reaction US fans have. There has been talks about him doing a collaboration with One Direction, a boy band in the vein of N’Sync and The Backstreet Boys.  With One Directions recent success, they could be the perfect vessel to introduce Conor to the US. In England and across Europe, Conor has no trouble gaining exposure after being named MTV UK’s Brand New Artist for 2012. He is currently performing some shows in England with aims of expanding the tour when his album is released.

Now for the music, which is the important part. First up are two of his biggest covers, as well as his cover of Beautiful Monsters, which is what led him to get a record deal. After those I’ll post his new single, which is a product of the industry music machine and does a huge disservice to Conor’s voice and abilities. But anyways,

And finally, here is the single. Ugh, I can’t get over how much the industry ruins talent. Gosh, all of his songs on YouTube are generally slowed down and stripped of lots of production. Most are really sparse and just let his voice do the work. Why can’t the industry just let him make songs like that instead of trying to turn him into an unoriginal pop machine that attempts to churn out radio singles. bleh, ill stop now. watch below. it’s actually not that bad, it just isn’t what it should be.

Time Warp Thursday

Wattup CMB folks. I present to you the first installment of Time Warp Thursday, where we go back in time and bring back those songs we all used to bump to… because how can you know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been? Now I figured I could go a couple ways with this. I could either post about the biggest hits from back in the day or I could focus on the musical anthropology of songs. After giving it some thought, I’ve decided I’m going to mix it up. Sometimes it’ll be one or the other, or both. Today, it’s both.

Time Warp Thursday Song of the Day: Kanye West ft. Syleena Johnson – All Falls Down

The song is off Kanye’s debut album, The College Dropout, an amazing production that was one of the first to diverge from the ubiquitous gangster façade seen in hip-hop/rap at the time. Gun-toting and violence were no longer synonymous with lyrical credibility. Kanye has always been a man of culture, and the frequent use of samples in his music is a testament to this. In “All Falls Down,” the soulful chorus voiced by Syleena Johnson is taken from Lauren Hill’s “Mystery of Iniquity.” Apparently, Kanye was never cleared to sample Hill’s song, so he just had Johnson sing the verse on his single. Check out “Mystery of Iniquity” below, performed by Hill during a televised MTV Unplugged special. It was nominated for a Grammy without ever having been promoted or receiving radio airplay.
