Artist Profile: Atlas

CMB is here again to introduce you to some local talent in the Philadephia area. He goes by the name Atlas and I recently got to see him perform last weekend. Originally I planned on seeing Zeds Dead that night at the Electric Factory, however an all age event and drugs involved called for disaster. Not gonna lie I thought I was gonna call it a night, but lucky Pure Productions was throwing down at a sweet underground place here in Philly called Verre.

Anyways the night turned out to be a crazy night with different DJs getting their turn to spin till the early morning. One DJ that I was digging was Atlas. His song selection was very nicely done, staying away from just top 20. One thing that I really enjoyed about Atlas was the energy he brought to the crowd. You would of thought people would of slowed down at about 3:30, but Altas had everyone going right till the end of the night and even played an extra song at the crowds demand.

To give you alittle background on Atlas, he has only been DJing for about two years now and started producing about the same time as well. Having been a casual musician his entire life, when his friend showed him some basics of DJing, he took off with it and now has a few works of his own. When I asked Atlas what are some artists that has inspired his work, he said “The first ones that come to mind aren’t very apparent in the music I’ve released so far, Amon Tobin, Brian Eno, Philip Glass. But also Diplo, Swedish House Mafia, and Kanye West among countless others.”

For a night that could of ended at about 10pm, it ended in the early morning and I got to hear some new and crazy talent. If you ever get the chance go to an underground warehouse rave, thats where the party really is at. Check out some of the tracks below by Atlas (yes there free to download)  and be sure to check out Atlas on Facebook and Soundcloud!

Event Recap: Borgore // White Panda @ TLA, Philly 10/13

He calls himself the Booty Monsta… On Oct. 13th Borgore and White Panda took the stage at Philadelphia’s Theater of the Living arts. To say I had any idea of what to expect would be a complete lie. White Panda came entirely out of left field, I’m usually not a fan of mash-up artists, but wow mixing Frankie goes to Hollywood’s Relax with the Bingo Player’s hit Mode and actually making it sound good, yeah.. I was impressed. They had the entire crowd raging from start to finish. So much energy, from their red and blue LED panda masks to their non stop movement on stage, they definitely did an excellent job in warming the crowd up with great mixes of the current hits.

Now after listening to the top 10s White Panda so enthusiastically delivered to us, I was ready for the opposite end of the spectrum with Borgore. Anticipating a darker and more slipknot-ish, head bang till your neck breaks kind of set from the booty monsta himself. The moment he stepped on stage, and so strategically placed his beverages of choice alongside him…to say he RAGED from start to finish would be an understatement. One of the greatest personalities in this genre, or his own genre, I should say “Gorestep” I’ve seen in awhile. Some serious bass and him rapping live, with no laptop; using CD’s and tables he had the crowd moshing and head banging through out the entire set. Definitely a crowd pleaser, calling on all the ladies to get on stage (18+ of course) to dance, while playing his hits Ice cream, Flex, Decisions. No one wanted it to end, his “one more song” upon the crowds’ request was one of the most bizarre tracks I’ve ever heard, and left the crowd in awe and chanting “Bitches Love Cake” on the way out.  (Written by Nora Fadil)
